Annotations are similar to footnotes, but normally appear in the margin. They may be numbered throughout each chapter or article. Notes annotating the text and corresponding to reference numbers in the text are called footnotes when they are printed at the foot of the page, and notes or endnotes when they are at the back of a book, at the end of a chapter or at the end of an article in a journal.
